Welcome to the Habitat Build Challenge 2011.

Habitat for Humanity is challenging New Zealanders to build or make something for a local cause or person in need. You could make a toy for a nearby children’s home, build a bench for your local school, or even craft a quilt for a community hospice. It’s totally up to you!

By asking family and friends to sponsor your build, you will also be supporting Habitat for Humanity’s vital home building programme for families in New Zealand currently living in poverty housing. (Habitat for Humanity New Zealand)

We know there are loads of creative people and budding DIY’ers out there, so why not give it a go and help Habitat for Humanity and your local community by building something special.

You can build as a team or as an individual and even if you’ve never built anything before we can provide some handy tips to get you going. Simply register your build on the website, receive a $50 voucher from Mitre10 Mega to get you going and start building.

The Mitre10 Mega voucher is only redeemable at all Auckland Mitre10 Mega’s and Hamilton Mitre10 Mega. The voucher must be spent on materials specific to the Build Challenge.

The Habitat Build Challenge has been developed to:

  • Promote the engagement of people in their communities.
  • Provide useful built or made items for local causes.
  • Through sponsorship of the builds provide fundraising for Habitat for Humanity’s local home building and renovation projects.
  • Raise awareness of Habitat for Humanity’s work with people living in poverty housing in New Zealand.

The Habitat Build Challenge will run from September 1st to October 3rd 2011.

All builds must be completed by the 1st October. On the 3rd October we shall be awarding two great prizes of a complete set of tools and tool box for the best builds. So sign up to the Habitat Build Challenge and help build something special in your local community.

This will give you plenty of time to organise and complete your build, promote it through friends and networks and find supporters and sponsors.

All sponsorship donations from the Build Challenge will go directly to home building and renovation projects for families and individuals in housing need (across) New Zealand. The money you raise will go towards these projects in your local area. Habitat builds and renovates around 40 homes per year throughout New Zealand. We rely heavily on the generosity of the New Zealand public to build our homes. Over 2000 Kiwi’s volunteered last year to help on our build sites, while others donate financially to sustain our work.
